Why everyone should have a low maintenance friendship

Sign of trust : We both take pinkie promises very seriously!

I have never been good at keeping in contact with people. I ignore phone calls and often respond to texts weeks after getting them. It’s not intentional. Sometimes communicating with those closest to me just feels like too much to handle, other times I just simply forget.

The people around me have gotten used to this now. In fact my friends replies are just as sporadic as mine. It works for us. We have what is often referred to as a ‘low maintenance friendship’.

A friendship where we don’t need to check in every single day, but we know that we are there indefinitely. A friendship where you understand that life gets busy, and you may not see each other as often as you’d like. But when you do, it’s always – always – like no time has passed.

My best friend and I met when we were four. We met in school and we’ve been inseparable ever since. I don’t remember the moment we met, but I wish I did.

She is my oldest friend. We have been through life’s ups and downs together – navigating our teenage years, university, careers, life in general. Nothing has changed. We still sit and talk for hours, laughing until our faces hurt.

We don’t have to be with each other every day to know that we love and care for one another. We don’t get offend when it takes one of us days, sometimes even weeks to reply.

Our friendship is just like any other friendship. We’ve seen each other laugh and cry. We’ve made stupid mistakes together. We’ve drunk way too much together. We’ve seen each other go through good times and bad. We know the ins and outs of each other’s lives and have inserted ourselves into each other’s families. Our parents still don’t trust us together and our dad’s even have the same name!

When we do get together, it’s like no time has passed. We will sit in the same spot, talking non-stop for hours and hours updating each other on our lives, time just passing us by without a care in the world.

We have both grown a lot as people, both together and apart – but we know that no matter what happens we have each other’s backs for life and there is no one I would rather have by my side trying to navigate this thing we call life.
